We are members of the Centenary Committee at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Bethnal Green. As you may be aware, our Parish Church will be celebrating the centenary of its opening in 2011. To mark this momentous occasion, the committee is planning a yearlong celebration of events, commencing in April 2011 and culminating in June 2012. We would like to invite you (and anyone else you would like to bring) along to a “Memories Workshop” on either Saturday 25 September at 3pm or Sunday 17 October at 3pm in the church hall of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Tea, coffee, sandwiches and cake will be provided. All we ask is that you tell us your memories so that we can either write them down or record them on tape for our “Memory Lane Evening” that we are planning to hold. If you would like to bring photos with you, we promise to return them to you promptly. Providing we have your permission, we will copy them and/or scan them first. It might be a good idea if you are bringing photos with you, to put your name and address on the back, so that the correct photos go back to the right people! Our idea is to hold a “Memory Lane Evening” in the church hall next year, whereby, we will chat to people on the subject of things they hold dear about OLA Church. For example, your happy memories of past events, or fond tales of past and/or present priests that have spent time in Bethnal Green. Perhaps you were one of the children that attended school here in the house. We would love to hear what that was like! We especially want this to be a light hearted affair, so there will be refreshments and music and the chance to possibly meet up with people you haven’t seen in ages!
We plan to create a “Memories Book” which will contain things such as letters we have received from past and present parishioners/priests and photos etc. This will be available on the evening for people to look through and write comments in should they wish to.
We hope to scan photos that we receive, and then, using a laptop, project the images onto the back wall of the church hall, above the stage area. We hope to be able to interview people, and if they are willing, record what they have to say, so that during the picture show, we can listen to people’s stories.
In order for all this to take place, we need to ‘capture’ your memories, whether they be photos you may have, or in a letter format (we have received several) or just by talking to one of us and either allowing us to record the conversation, or by one of us taking notes. That is why we are holding our ‘Memories Workshops’ on Saturday, 25 September and Sunday 17 October.
